IUI Process

How does the IUI process work?

For your first IUI, you and your fertility doctor will decide if you should use an injectable medication to encourage egg production and help ready the uterus for potential fertilization by the injected sperm, or rely on your natural cycle.

Preparing for IUI

For your first IUI, you and your fertility doctor will decide if you should use an injectable medication to encourage egg production and help ready the uterus for potential fertilization by the injected sperm, or rely on your natural cycle.

If an injectable fertility medication is warranted, we use a protocol called controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH). A synthetic form of the follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) which stimulates your ovaries to produce mature eggs is used. COH is also an excellent way to encourage multiple follicle growth which can increase the chance of IUI success.

After these hormone injections, we monitor egg development with ultrasounds, and possibly also blood tests. We measure the number and size of follicles, and once they reach the proper size, you’ll do one hormone injection of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). This hormone helps thicken the uterine lining to support a growing embryo. This “trigger shot” initiates ovulation of the egg. About 1½ -2 days later, your IUI will be performed.

Day-of IUI procedures

If you have a male partner, on the day of your intra uterine insemination, your partner will collect and provide a semen specimen at the MCRM Fertility lab. The lab will process the fresh specimen through a process often calledsperm washing, for the IUI. This process creates a concentrate of the most active sperm for insemination.

If you’re using donor sperm, or sperm priorly collected and frozen, it will have already been concentrated. In this case it will be thawed for use.

The “concentrate” will be placed into a catheter which is then inserted into your uterus during the insemination process.

How Much Does IUI Cost?

Our fertility clinic is extremely sensitive to our patients’ concerns over budget. From our fertility specialists to our financial counselors, we support you thoroughly through even difficult budget decisions that impact your fertility treatments. Our goal is always to help make pregnancy and building a family possible for you.

There is some leeway in how we approach IUI. Depending on your circumstances, we may or may not choose to start with medication to help stimulate egg production. We also have different medications to choose from, which can impact your costs.

Every patient’s insurance coverage is also different. So it’s impossible to give one general answer to the question of IUI costs. When you meet with your financial counselor, they can give you the answers you need in an individualized, specific analysis of your coverage and out of pocket expenses.

For patients with insurance coverage for fertility treatment, often a course of IUI treatment is required to be attempted before any IVF treatment can be done.  Your financial counselor will help you assess if this is the case with your insurance coverage.
