Egg Freezing

Egg cryopreservation (egg freezing)

Egg cryopreservation is simply the freezing or cryopreservation of one’s eggs for future fertility use. When the time is right, you can thaw and fertilize the eggs with either your partner’s sperm or donor sperm. In the laboratory, the fertilized eggs grow into embryos. The intended parent can then receive the developed embryos through an embryo transfer.

How does egg freezing work?

Egg freezing provides a female some fertility security by preserving today’s fertility for the future. You wish to be a parent, someday, but today is not the right time. Instead of waiting for the right time, a woman can freeze her eggs when she is young to preserve her fertility.

What does egg freezing entail?

Freezing eggs is similar to the in vitro fertilization process. It entails a multistep process that includes:

  • Controlled Ovarian Hyperstimulation (COH)
  • Egg Retrieval
  • Egg Cryopreservation

Freezing your eggs involves taking some medications that hyperstimulate your ovaries to produce eggs (oocytes). We carefully control and monitor the process, and then retrieve the oocytes in a short, minimally invasive surgical procedure. Patients go home the same day. We then freeze – or “cryopreserve” – the eggs for future use.
