Human Reproduction (September 12, 2016) specifically took a look at whether a difference between single-cleavage day 3 embryo transfer and single blastocyst-stage day 5 transfer. This is a good study that took a look a 1,000 embryo transfers and it depicts that day 3 embryos transfers do work; HOWEVER, it indicates day 5/blastocyst embryo transfers are BETTER. There is a higher pregnancy rate per transfer (nearly 7% greater) and it takes fewer procedures to get to live birth. For the patient this translates that one will typically save money by requiring fewer transfers to achieve the desired outcome of a healthy pregnancy and in less time by the use of a day 5 blastocyst transfer versus a day 3 transfer.
