Multiple Options for All Families
Here is an overview of the main fertility options available for same-sex couples looking to grow their families.
Pregnancy Options for Lesbian Couples:
Reciprocal IVF – Some couples can share the parenting journey through reciprocal IVF. One partner can undergo stimulation of the ovaries in order to collect eggs. The collected eggs would then be fertilized in a lab using donor sperm. The resulting embryo(s) are then transferred to the other partner. This allows both partners to participate in the pregnancy.
Donor Sperm IUI – Sperm from a screened donor is placed directly into the uterus via an intrauterine insemination procedure.
Gestational Carrier – Using IVF, one intended parent’s eggs can be inseminated with donor sperm, and a resulting embryo can be transferred to the uterus of a gestational carrier. The gestational carrier would carry the pregnancy. Screening for all parties involved is carried out prior to this process and a legal contract generally must be in place prior to use of a gestational carrier.
Options for Gay Male Couples:
Egg Donation and Gestational Carrier: An embryo can be yielded created from a donor egg and sperm from an intended parent. An embryo is transferred to the uterus of a gestational carrier. The gestational carries the pregnancy. Screening for all parties involved is carried out prior to this process and a legal contract generally must be in place prior to use of a gestational carrier.
