COVID-19 infection is associated with serious adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. Another NIH-funded study published in JAMA on February 7, 2022, has demonstrated that pregnant women infected with SARS-CoV-2 are more likely to experience the following compared to women not infected COVID19:

(1) preterm delivery at less than 32 weeks

(2) hypertensive disorders of pregnancy like preeclampsia

(3) post-partum hemorrhage

(4) fetal or neonatal death (miscarriage or stillbirth)

Asymptomatic infection was not associated with these increased pregnancy risks. This study compared 2,352 women with COVID19 with 11, 752 women who did not have COVID19 and were pregnant or postpartum. The findings, again, emphasize the importance of patients planning pregnancy or who are already pregnant to seek out vaccination and take other precautions to lower risks of becoming infected with COVID19.
